St. Louis, MO (August 28, 2017) – After running near the top all weekend, Team Pelfrey driver TJ Fischer collected his eighth top-five finish of the 2017 Pro Mazda Championship season. Round 10 of the season took place on the 1.25-mile oval at Gateway Motorsports Park, just outside St. Louis, Missouri. The event marked Fischer’s first ever oval race.
As part of the series’ lone oval appearance of the season and under a condensed two-day schedule, the Pro Mazda field would only have a 45-minute practice to prepare for qualifying. Fischer’s two-lap average of 135.798 mph in qualifying would place the 24-year-old on the inside of the second row for the 30-minute contest.
Fischer’s mental approach and race craft would tab the series sophomore as a contender for the podium, ultimately falling short in the closing stages of the race with track temperatures falling during the evening.
After completing 53 laps, the Vacaville, Calif.-native finished the race with a solid fourth-place finish, netting his eighth top-five of 2017 and maintaining third in the championship standings.
“My first oval experience in the #82 Project O2/#Race2TheRescue Team Pelfrey machine was awesome,” noted Fischer. “Gateway Motorsports Park put on an awesome show and made a butter smooth track that was super-fast. After a 14-year hiatus, the St. Louis fans jam packed the house which was awesome to see such a great fan base after so long. We had good pace in my first ever oval qualifying experience with P3 and the race we brought home a solid P4. All in all, very happy with learning ovals and now we rock it to the end of the season at the Glen. Thanks to Team Pelfrey, Propeller Health and the rest of my partners that helped me along our journey so far.”
The series final two races take place at the historic Watkins Glen International circuit in upstate New York. Practice begins on Friday, September 1 at 9:30 a.m. ET. Race 1 begins at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and Race 2 begins at 7:55 a.m. on Sunday. Both races will air on RoadToIndy.TV.
